چکیده

The mechanical characterization of mortars is problematic due to their sensitivity to stress concentration defects, namely pores and flaws. In this paper, data on three-point bending, Young’s modulus and fracture toughness of mortar beams are presented and discussed. Here, Weibull statistics is applied to analyse flexural strength of the developed mortar. Based on data obtained according to the EN196-1 standard and corrected values taking into account the actual position where failure origin took place, Weibull modulus was found to decrease from 28 to 22, respectively. In addition, fracture toughness was determined using Griffith approach based on critical crack sizes measured by fractography in fracture surfaces. A value of 0.37±0.04 MPa m1⁄2 was obtained, which is typical of very fragile brittle materials. © 2017 Portuguese Society of Materials (SPM). Published by Elsevier España, S.L.U.. Application-Oriented Chemical Optimization of a Metakaolin Based Geopolymer

In this study the development of a metakaolin based geopolymeric mortar to be used as bonding matrix for external strengthening of reinforced concrete beams is reported. Four geopolymer formulations have been obtained by varying the composition of the activating solution in terms of SiO₂/Na₂O ratio. The obtained samples have been characterized from a structural, microstructural and mechanical p...

Investigation of Rehabilitation Effects on Fire Damaged High Strength Concrete Beams

Abstract—When high strength reinforced concrete is exposed to high temperature due to a fire, deteriorations occur such as loss in strength and elastic modulus, cracking and spalling of the concrete. Therefore, it is important to understand risk of structural safety in building structures by studying structural behaviors and rehabilitation of fire damaged high strength concrete structures. This...

Effects of Pozzolanic Admixture (Waste Bricks) on Mechanical Response of Mortar

This work presents an experimental study realized at the materials laboratory of the University of M’sila. It consists to vary the percentage of the pozzolanic admixture (waste bricks) in cement by the substitution method (partial replacement of the clinker by the calcined clay). The characteristics of cement at anhydrous state and the hydrated state (chemical composition, specific weight and f...

Preparation of Sulfur Mortar from Modified Sulfur

Mixtures of mineral aggregate and modified sulfur, wherein the modified sulfur functions as a binder, are termed sulfur concretes or sulfur mortars depending on the form of the mineral aggregate. Molten sulfur reacted with olefinic additive, at 130-140 ºC, and then mixed with preheated filler and aggregates. Sulfur mortar samples were prepared by mixing 32 % molten sulfur, 10 % filler and 5...
